MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin corn production is forecast at 512 million bushels, down 6 percent from the previous year, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Crop Production report. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 165.0 bushels per acre, down 15.0 bushels per acre from last year. Corn planted acreage is estimated at 4.00 million acres. An estimated 3.10 million of the acres planted will be harvested for grain.
Soybean production is forecast at 91.1 million bushels, down 22 percent from the previous year. The yield is forecast at 44.0 bushels per acre, 10.0 bushels lower than 2022. Soybean planted acreage is estimated at 2.10 million acres with 2.07 million acres to be harvested.
Production of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures for hay is forecast at 2.32 million tons, down 6 percent from the previous year. Yield is expected to average 2.80 tons per acre, down 0.30 tons per acre from last year. Production of other hay is forecast at 680,000 tons, up 33 percent from last year. Yield for other hay is expected to average 1.70 tons per acre, unchanged from last year. Harvested area is forecast at 400,000 acres, up 100,000 acres from last year.
The forecasts in this report are based on October 1 conditions in Wisconsin and do not reflect weather effects since that time. The next corn and soybean production forecasts, based on conditions as of November 1, will be released on November 9
United States Crop Production
Corn production for grain is forecast at 15.1 billion bushels, down less than 1 percent from the previous forecast but up 10 percent from 2022. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 173.0 bushels per harvested acre, down 0.8 bushels from the previous forecast and down 0.4 bushels from last year. Area harvested for grain, forecast at 87.1 million acres, is unchanged from the previous forecast but up 10 percent from the last year.
Soybean production for beans is forecast at 4.10 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the previous forecast and down 4 percent from 2022. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 49.6 bushels per acre, down 0.5 bushels from the previous forecast but equal to 2022. Area harvested for beans in the United States is forecast at 82.8 million acres, unchanged from the previous forecast but down 4 percent from 2022.
