OLYMPIA, Wash. — USDA NASS released its Northwest Region Crop Production Report on August 11, 2023.
Winter Wheat
Based on August 1, 2023 conditions, production of winter wheat in Idaho is forecast at 56.6 million bushels, down 4 percent from the July 1 forecast and down 12 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 650,000 acres, is down 40,000 acres from the previous forecast and down 60,000 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 87.0 bushels per acre, down 3.0 bushels from 2022. Oregon winter wheat production is forecast at 40.2 million bushels, down 2 percent from last month and down 18 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 730,000 acres, is unchanged from the previous forecast but up 10,000 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 55.0 bushels per acre, down 13.0 bushels from the previous year. Washington winter wheat production is forecast at 94.0 million bushels, down 5 percent from last month and down 23 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 1.74 million acres, is unchanged from the previous forecast but down 60,000 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 54.0 bushels per acre, down 14.0 bushels from the previous year.
Spring Wheat
Idaho spring wheat production is forecast at 30.0 million bushels, down 5 percent from the July 1 forecast but up 3 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 375,000 acres, is unchanged from the previous forecast but up 15,000 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 80.0 bushels per acre, down 1.0 bushel from 2022. Washington spring wheat production is forecast at 21.8 million bushels, down 1 percent from last month but up 1 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 485,000 acres, is up 45,000 from the previous forecast and up 15,000 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 45.0 bushels per acre, down 1.0 bushel from the previous year.
Barley
Idaho barley production is forecast at 63.6 million bushels, up 7 percent from the July 1 forecast and up 6 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 530,000 acres, is down 20,000 acres from the previous forecast and down 10,000 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 120.0 bushels per acre, up 9.0 bushels from 2022. Washington barley production is forecast at 4.36 million bushels, unchanged from last month but down 14 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 67,000 acres, is unchanged from the previous forecast but up 7,000 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 65.0 bushels per acre, down 19.0 bushels from the previous year.
Oats
Idaho oats production is forecast at 900,000 bushels, unchanged from the July 1 forecast but down 12 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 10,000 acres, is unchanged from the previous forecast but down 6,000 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 90.0 bushels per acre, up 26.0 bushels from 2022. Oregon oats production is forecast at 1 million bushels, down 5 percent from the July 1 forecast but up 19 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 10,000 acres, is unchanged from the previous forecast but up 2,000 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 100.0 bushels per acre, down 5.0 bushels from the previous year.
Corn
Idaho corn production is forecast at 26.5 million bushels, up 12 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 130,000 acres, is up 20,000 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 204.0 bushels per acre, down 12.0 bushels from 2022. Corn production in Washington is forecast at 22.1 million bushels, up 34 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 105,000 acres, is up 30,000 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 210.0 bushels per acre, down 10.0 bushels from 2022.
Dry Edible Beans
Based on August 1, 2023 conditions, dry bean production in Idaho is forecast at 928,000 cwt., down 12 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 39,000 acres, is down 5,000 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 23.8 cwt. per acre, down 0.2 cwt. from 2022. Dry bean production in Washington is forecast at 964,000 cwt., up 38 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 37,500 acres, is up 10,800 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 25.7 cwt. per acre, down 0.5 cwt. from 2022.
Alfalfa Hay
Idaho alfalfa hay production is forecast at 4.80 million tons, up 5 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 1.09 million acres, is up 30,000 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 4.4 tons per acre, up 0.1 ton from 2022. Oregon alfalfa hay production is forecast at 1.61 million tons, up 5 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 350,000 acres, is unchanged from 2022. Yield is expected to be 4.6 tons per acre, up 0.2 ton from the previous year. Washington alfalfa hay production is forecast at 1.55 million tons, down 17 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 360,000 acres, is unchanged from 2022. Yield is expected to be 4.3 tons per acre, down 0.9 ton from the previous year.
Other Hay
Idaho other hay production is forecast at 875,000 tons, up 14 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 350,000 acres, is unchanged from 2022. Yield is expected to be 2.5 tons per acre, up 0.3 ton from 2022. Oregon other hay production is forecast at 1.43 million tons, up 32 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 570,000 acres, is up 100,000 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 2.5 tons per acre, up 0.2 ton from the previous year. Washington other hay production is forecast at 759,000 tons, down 16 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 330,000 acres, is up 40,000 acres from 2022. Yield is expected to be 2.3 tons per acre, down 0.8 ton from the previous year.
Hops
Hop production in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington is forecast at 104 million pounds for 2023, up 2 percent from last year. Area harvested is forecast at 55,030 acres, down 8 percent from 2022. Yield is estimated at 1,886 pounds per acre, 192 pounds higher than the 2022.
Survey Procedures
Farm operator surveys were conducted between July 30 and August 6 to gather information on expected yield as of August 1. The farm operator survey was conducted primarily by telephone with some use of mail, internet and personal interviewers. These growers will continue to be surveyed throughout the growing season to provide indications of average yields. The survey data were also reviewed considering weather patterns and crop progress compared to previous months and previous years.
