ATHENS, Ga. — Corn production for grain in the United States is forecast at 15.1 billion bushels. Based on conditions as of September 1, yields are expected to average 173.8 bushels per harvested acre. Soybean production for beans is forecast at 4.15 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the previous forecast and down 3 percent from 2022. All cotton production in the United States is forecast at 13.1 million 480-pound bales, with an expected yield of 786 pounds per harvested acre. Peanut production is forecast at 6.32 billion pounds, up 2 percent from the previous forecast and up 14 percent from 2022.
Key findings for the Southern Region from the September Crop Production report
Alabama: Corn acreage is revised down from the previous estimate to 345,000 acres planted and 335,000 acres harvested for grain. Production is forecast at 55.6 million bushels, down slightly from last month, but up 63 percent from 2022. Cotton production is forecast at 680,000 bales, down 4 percent from last month and down 18 percent from 2022. Peanut acreage is revised up from the previous estimate to 175,000 acres planted with production forecast at 568 million pounds, up 2 percent from 2022. Soybean acreage is revised down from the previous estimate to 350,000 acres planted with production forecast at 14.8 million bushels, down 11 percent from last month, but up 2 percent from last year.
Florida: Cotton acreage is revised down from the previous estimate to 89,000 acres planted with production forecast at 100,000 bales, down 35 percent from last month and down 39 percent from 2022. Peanut acreage is revised down from the previous estimate to 160,000 acres planted. Production is forecast at 483 million pounds, down 23 percent from last month and down 13 percent from 2022. Sugarcane production is forecast at 18.1 million tons, up 1 percent from 2022.
Georgia: Corn acreage is revised up from the previous estimate to 500,000 acres planted and 450,000 acres harvested for grain. Production is forecast at 79.7 million bushels, up 6 percent from last month, and up 18 percent from 2022. Cotton acreage is revised down from the previous estimate to 1.11 million acres planted with production forecast at 2.30 million bales, down 13 percent from last year. Peanut acreage is revised up from the previous estimate to 775,000 acres planted. Production is forecast at 3.31 billion pounds, up 15 percent from a year ago. Soybean acreage is revised down from the previous estimate to 160,000 acres planted and 155,000 acres harvested for beans. Production is forecast at 6.51 million bushels, down 1 percent from 2022. Tobacco production is forecast at 12.6 million pounds, down 11 percent from last month and unchanged from 2022.
South Carolina: Corn acreage is revised down from the previous estimate to 375,000 acres planted and 355,000 acres harvested for grain. Based on conditions as of September 1, yields are expected to average 142 bushels per acre. If realized, this would be a new state record yield per acre. Production is forecast at 50.4 million bushels, up 38 percent from 2022. Cotton acreage is revised down from the previous estimate to 210,000 acres planted with production forecast at 330,000 bales, down 15 percent from last month and down 35 percent from last year. Peanut acreage is revised down from the previous estimate to 76,000 planted acres. Peanut production is forecast at 292 million pounds, up 2 percent from 2022. Soybean acreage is revised down from the previous estimate to 395,000 acres planted with production forecast at 13.7 million bushels, down 5 percent from last year. Tobacco production, at 12.2 million pounds, is up 5 percent from last year.
