ATHENS, Ga. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) estimates corn planted area for all purposes in 2023 at 94.1 million acres, up 6 percent or 5.52 million acres from last year. This represents the third highest planted acreage in the United States since 1944. Soybean planted area for 2023 is estimated at 83.5 million acres, down 5 percent from last year. All cotton planted area for 2023 is estimated at 11.1 million acres, down 19 percent from last year. All wheat planted area for 2023 is estimated at 49.6 million acres, up 9 percent from 2022.
Key findings for the Southern Region released in the Acreage Report
Alabama: Corn planted area for all purposes is estimated at 360,000 acres, up 20 percent from 2022. Cotton planted area, at 380,000 acres, is down 13 percent from 2022. Peanuts, estimated at 170,000 acres, are up 3 percent from 2022. Soybean planted area is estimated at 400,000 acres, up 11 percent from last year. Winter wheat planted area, at 210,000 acres, is up 17 percent from 2022.
Florida: Corn planted area for all purposes is estimated at 100,000 acres, up 18 percent from 2022. Cotton planted area, at 90,000 acres, is down 15 percent from 2022. Peanuts, estimated at 175,000 acres, are up 17 percent from 2022.
Georgia: Corn planted area for all purposes is estimated at 480,000 acres, up 13 percent from 2022. Cotton planted area, at 1.20 million acres, is down 7 percent from 2022. Peanuts, estimated at 760,000 acres, are up 11 percent from 2022. Soybean planted area is estimated at 170,000 acres, up 3 percent from last year. Tobacco harvested area, at 6,500 acres, is up 8 percent from the previous year. Winter wheat planted area, at 200,000 acres, is unchanged from 2022.
South Carolina: Corn planted area for all purposes is estimated at 390,000 acres, up 22 percent from 2022. Cotton planted area, at 230,000 acres, is down 15 percent from 2022. Peanuts, estimated at 85,000 acres, are up 20 percent from a year ago. Soybean planted area is estimated at 440,000 acres, up 9 percent from last year. Tobacco harvested area, at 5,400 acres, is down 7 percent from the previous year. Winter wheat planted area, at 110,000 acres, is down 8 percent from 2022.
