ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — A backyard chicken in Morley, Mo. was just named Miss Performance in the Purina® Miss Flock-Tober® contest. Local flock raiser Lori McCoy entered to compete against hundreds of strong hens to earn this honor.
“Winning Miss Performance is one of the most exciting things to happen in our small town,” says McCoy. “We started raising a flock two years ago after my husband bought a cute red coop so my granddaughter, Maylee, and I could have chickens. Every time my family cracks an egg, I hope they’ll remember the memories we’ve made with our flock.”
Miss Flock-Tober®, hosted by Purina Animal Nutrition on the Purina Poultry Facebook page, celebrates strong hens during this annual contest. McCoy submitted her photo of Maylee and Hei Hei, her favorite Easter Egger hen. As the winner of this round, she wins a Flock-Tober® fun box and is now in the running to win the ultimate title of Miss Flock-Tober® 2018, with the grand prize being a year’s supply of Purina® poultry feed.
“When I was a little girl, my daddy would bring farm fresh eggs home. They tasted so good and had rich yellow yolks,” McCoy says. “Finding eggs with double yolks became a fun game. Hei Hei is notorious for laying eggs with double yolks, so she really is Miss Performance!”
“Maylee loves the fun and excitement of seeing the shapes, sizes and colors of the eggs,” continues McCoy. “By collecting eggs she has learned how to care for a flock and where food comes from. We read chicken story books and bake bread or make French toast using our farm fresh eggs. On Dr. Suess’ birthday, we made green eggs and ham! Having fun and making memories as a family is the best part of having a backyard flock.”
The next round of Miss Flock-Tober® begins October 8 with the category of Miss Fancy Feathers. The top entry in each of the four rounds of the Miss Flock-Tober® contest will move on to the final round, which begins October 22.
