EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Indiana 2023 winter wheat yield was a record high, according to Nathanial Warenski, State Statistician, USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office.
Winter wheat was planted on 405,000 acres, with 335,000 acres harvested for grain. Indiana wheat yields averaged 92 bushels per acre in 2023, up 11 bushels from last year. Production, at 30.8 million bushels, was up 59 percent from 2022.
Despite a dry May and June, Indiana winter wheat yielded record highs. Wheat harvest began in mid-June and was nearly complete by the third week of July. Harvest was completed slightly behind of the 5-year average with little to no harvest related problems. Quality was reported to be excellent.
Nationally, winter wheat production for 2023 totaled 1.25 billion bushels, up 13 percent from the 2022 total of 1.10 billion bushels. The United States yield, at 50.6 bushels per acre, was up 3.6 bushels from 2022. Area harvested for grain was estimated at 24.7 million acres, up 5 percent from 2022. Record low planted and harvested acres were estimated in Utah in 2023. Record high yields were estimated in Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia for 2023. The eastern third of the United States had better conditions than the rest of the country.
