BEREA, Ky. — The Community Foundation, Strengthening Inland Southern California through Philanthropy, has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Kentucky Association of Food Banks (KAFB) for the Farms to Food Banks Program. The award is a Holiday Grant Program from the S.L. Gimbel Foundation, a component fund at The Community Foundation.
The Farms to Food Banks program increases access to healthful fresh produce among hungry Kentuckians while at the same time supporting farmers and reducing the amount of wasted food.
Grant funds will be used to reimburse Kentucky farmers for the harvest and delivery of fresh surplus produce that would otherwise go to waste.
“Through this grant, the Kentucky Association of Food Banks will be able to distribute approximately 42,500 pounds of fresh, Kentucky-grown produce through our food bank network,” reports Sarah Vaughn, Program Assistant for KAFB. “That amount is the equivalent of filling half a plate full of fruits and vegetables for 70,833 meals for hungry Kentuckians across the Commonwealth.”
