NEW YORK — Black Farmer Fund, a community-led investment fund that invests in Black agricultural and food businesses in the Northeast, dedicated to supporting and empowering Black farmers, is delighted to share two significant milestones in our journey. We are thrilled to announce that our Co-Founders, Olivia Watkins and Karen Washington, have been honored as James Beard Humanitarians of the Year. This prestigious award marks a historic moment as they become the first African Americans to receive this esteemed prize.
This recognition celebrates their relentless dedication to fostering equitable opportunities for Black farmers, transforming the agricultural landscape, and addressing systemic inequities. By honoring our Co-Founders with this award, the James Beard Foundation is the Black Farmer Fund’s pivotal role in creating a sustainable food system for Black communities and all communities.
Black Farmer Fund is also excited to announce a significant transition in our organizational structure. Black Farmer Fund is transitioning from a traditional hierarchical model with a President to a dynamic shared leadership approach with Co-Executive Directors. With this new approach, Olivia Watkins, our current President, will transition to a shared leadership model with our now Program Director, Melanie Allen. Together, they will be Co-Executive Directors of our organization, fostering collaboration, inclusivity, and shared accountability.
As we venture into this new era, Melanie Allen and Olivia Watkins bring a wealth of experience, expertise, and unwavering commitment to the Black Farmer Fund’s mission. Their visionary leadership, combined with their deep-rooted understanding of the challenges faced by Black farmers, will further strengthen our ability to provide capital and community resources to Black Agricultural and Food Businesses.
These recent achievements, the James Beard Humanitarian Award, and our innovative leadership transition, represent significant milestones in our ongoing journey toward equity and justice.
