EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State University Extension will offer its popular Beginning Farmer Webinar Series on nine different evenings throughout the winter and spring of 2017. Among the various topics of interest will be Fencing and Watering Systems for Livestock on Pasture on Monday, March 13, 2017, from 7-9 p.m.
Proper fence planning and construction will keep cattle, sheep, goats and other livestock on the right side of the fence, reducing stress, liability and neighborhood conflicts for all involved. It will also improve pasture management, increasing stocking rates and animal performance, and decreasing weed pressure. A properly sized and installed livestock watering system will improve animal performance, labor efficiency and pasture nutrient management.
Presenters for this evening webinar include Jerry Lindquist, MSU Extension grazing educator, and Kevin Gould, MSU Extension beef cattle educator. These presenters have over 55 years of experience working with livestock producers and also raising livestock.
Participants will learn the basics of proper fence design for all the major grazing animal species. There will be a strong emphasis on electrified fencing with instruction on design, proper charging and maintenance to keep these fences effective. They will also learn about the different types and advantages of pasture water systems, along with the proper sizing and management to provide fresh, wholesome water to livestock.
