ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota farm production expenditures totaled $21.4 billion in 2022, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Farm Production Expenditures 2022 Summary report. This was $1.25 billion above the 2021 total expenditures. Feed expense, down 8 percent to $3.40 billion, represented the largest single production expense in Minnesota in 2022, accounting for 16 percent of the total. Fertilizers, up 35 percent to $2.37 billion, was the second largest expense and accounted for 11 percent of total expenditures. Rent was up 12 percent to $2.31 billion and accounted for 11 percent of the total. The largest percentage increases from last year were for Miscellaneous Capital Expenses (up 44 percent), Fuel (up 38 percent), and Fertilizers (up 35 percent). The largest percentage decreases from last year were for Tractors and Self-Propelled Farm Machinery (down 16 percent), Taxes (down 14 percent), and Feed (down 8 percent).
