LEONARDTOWN, Md. — University of Maryland Extension specialists and agents will lead a free ice cream social and informative tour for current and prospective vegetable growers on July 29, 2022, at the farm of Mahlon Stauffer Jr. in St. Mary’s County.
The farm is a diversified vegetable operation with tomato, watermelon, squash, sweet corn, cucumber, peppers, cantaloupe and other minor crops. The farm also has a retail farm stand. The tour will include presentations such as a hot set tomato demonstration. Growers are encouraged to discuss vegetable questions and concerns with other participants and the extension staff, and handouts will be provided.
Refreshments and ice cream will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the tour will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Registration is not required and the event will be held rain or shine.
The event takes place at Stauffer Produce, 28455 Point Lookout Rd, Leonardtown, Maryland.
Directions from points north: Take Route 5 South toward Loveville/Leonardtown. The farm is located just south of the intersection of Rt. 247 and Rt. 5 across from the SOMD Hearth store.
